Ending Period Poverty

Pad Up A Girl–Kenya is a community-based organization founded in 2021 to address period poverty among girls in Dagoretti, Nairobi. It has grown into a movement that empowers girls through sanitary pad distribution, reproductive health education, mentorship, community awareness, and scholarships, helping them stay in school and pursue their goals with dignity.

Why It Matters

In Kenya, about 65% of women and girls cannot afford menstrual products. Around 42% of schoolgirls have never used a sanitary pad, contributing to over 1 million girls missing 3–4 school days each month, nearly six weeks of learning lost per year, with up to 70% reporting negative academic impacts; these challenges intersect with broader vulnerabilities, as about 15% of girls aged 15–19 have begun childbearing, pregnancy remains a leading cause of school dropout, and an estimated 13,000 girls leave school each year due to pregnancy, reinforcing cycles of poverty, poor health outcomes, and reduced educational attainment.

Our Goals

01.

Supply Menstrual Kits

Ensure young girls from low-income households receive menstrual kits. Each menstrual kit contains sanitary pads for one year, 2 reusable pads, panties and a booklet. We also engage boys by providing them with boxers and educational booklets, helping them understand menstruation and break the stigma around discussing it.

02.

Menstrual Education Awareness

Organize workshops, school discussion sessions and awareness campaigns to educate our students and community about the importance of menstrual hygiene and to kill the stigma around periods.

03.

School Fees Sponsorship for Girls

Sponsoring girls’ secondary education by covering school fees and essential school costs significantly reduces dropout rates, as financial barriers are a leading cause of girls leaving school in Kenya.
